I haven’t used my blog (for good or evil) in quite some time, but thought maybe I could use it to participate in my lovely book club even while far-far away. So, here’s my opinion of The House at Riverton – which I read a LOOOONG time ago it seems:
Why oh why can’t anyone hire a good editor anymore? I thought this had the trappings of a great novel. Crazy characters, an interesting plot, some intrigue & mystery. But it just never panned out. Some of my bitches…….. What’s with the game? Why didn’t that ever GO anywhere? It seemed like such an important part of the story – all the rules and secrecy, and then it ended up being pretty much nothing.
How come we never really knew or understood what made Emmaline tick? Because of that, I found it hard to believe that she was so in love with Robbie she would rat her sister out rather than give him up. Especially because it must have been painfully obvious that Hannah was so miserable. I mean, if a guy never talks to you, and is rude and even mean when he does, and after a couple of years you realize he loves your sister – you don’t LOVE him anymore. You don’t pine for him anymore. At least she didn’t appear to in this novel. Whatever.
I also thought it got a little draggy at times. But I suppose it wasn’t totally horrible – just not my favorite.
What did you think about it?
